Coinbase launches UK derivatives with up to 50x leverage

Coinbase launches derivatives for UK pros with 170 contracts and 50x leverage after MiFID nod.

  • Coinbase is launching futures, perpetuals, and options for professional investors in the UK, with over 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities, and FX.
  • Perpetuals offer up to 50x leverage and trade around the clock, while dated futures cap at 20x leverage.
  • The launch follows the MiFID investment services authorization the FCA granted Coinbase in July.

Coinbase announced Tuesday that it is opening derivatives trading to professional investors in the UK, offering more than 170 contracts across crypto, commodities, equities, and foreign exchange with leverage up to 50 times, according to a company announcement. The offering covers three contract types, with perpetuals spanning all assets, carrying no expiry date, and trading around the clock at up to 50x leverage.

Dated futures settle on fixed dates and cap leverage at 20x, while crypto options cover calls and puts across single and multi-leg strategies. Only investors classified as professional clients will qualify, as the Financial Conduct Authority has barred the sale of crypto derivatives to UK retail consumers since 2021.

The launch builds on the MiFID investment services authorization Coinbase secured from the FCA on July 7, which cleared it to offer instruments beyond crypto. Coinbase Vice President Keith Grose framed the launch as part of the firm’s “Everything Exchange” strategy. The rollout arrives five days after Coinbase brought 24/5 U.S. stock trading to UK users and six days after it opened perpetuals to wholesale clients in Australia.

This expansion comes as the FCA finalized its crypto framework in June, though the regime does not become mandatory until October 2027. Meanwhile, Parliament’s Crypto and Digital Assets All-Party Parliamentary Group wrote to bank chief executives Tuesday over an inquiry into banking access after complaints that crypto firms cannot reliably open accounts.
