Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Bitcoin-by-2030-is-a-reasonable-target.html” target=”_blank”>told CNBC’s Squawk Box Asia on Thursday that Bitcoin reaching $400,000 by 2030 remains a “reasonable target,” even as BTC trades near $77,000.
Armstrong cited Bitcoin’s four-year cycle, arguing the market typically follows a euphoric run-up with a year-long decline. “We’ve actually just come across the one-year mark for this down period,” he said, adding that “I personally believe that the bottom is in on Bitcoin in this most recent cycle.”
He also noted that runups tend to precede Bitcoin halvings, with the next one expected in roughly 18 months. “I think the next year or two is going to be good for Bitcoin,” Armstrong said.
Reaching $400,000 would require a fivefold rise in just over three years. The downturn has already forced Coinbase to cut 14% of its staff and miss second-quarter earnings expectations.
Armstrong expressed confidence about regulatory progress in Washington. The Senate votes on the Clarity Act on September 15, and he said the legislation is ready for a yes vote based on his conversations with lawmakers.
Law enforcement groups, banks, and crypto companies have all signed on, he added. The remaining sticking point involves ethics rules governing the president’s family crypto ventures, with the White House offering what Armstrong called an “unprecedented” provision while Democrats push for divestiture.
Those talks remain active and close to resolution, he said, though prediction market Myriad puts just a 17% chance on the Clarity Act being signed into law in 2026.
Armstrong said failure would not much matter because the SEC and CFTC are prepared to publish rulemaking under existing authority. Either way, he expects clarity within a month.
He cited last year’s Genius Act as precedent, noting that more than 150 large companies integrated stablecoins within three months of its passage. The Clarity Act would also bring tokenized equities and perpetual futures to U.S. customers.
Coinbase has been building toward both regardless, announcing plans in June for tokenized stock trading with automatic dividends and becoming the first U.S. exchange approved for crypto perps in May.
