- Chiba Institute of Technology has joined Theta EdgeCloud’s academic network as the first Japanese university partner
- Professor Toru Takagi’s laboratory and a 250-student Web3 club co-led by university President Joi Ito will use Theta’s decentralized GPU infrastructure
- Theta EdgeCloud provides distributed computing from over 30,000 edge nodes at reduced cost compared to traditional cloud services
THETA Network has added Chiba Institute of Technology to its global academic network, with the Japanese university’s Takagi Laboratory and Web3 club gaining access to decentralized GPU infrastructure through Theta EdgeCloud. The partnership represents Theta’s first academic collaboration in Japan, a country where the network has already secured regulatory clearance under the FSA-supervised crypto framework and built enterprise ties with NTT Digital.
Professor Toru Takagi, who holds a PhD in Engineering from Chiba Institute of Technology, leads the Takagi Laboratory and teaches in the Department of Digital Transformation Science. The lab’s research applies mathematics and model theory to understand natural and social phenomena as computer-modeled systems, with work extending into game theory, automated proving, and cellular activity structuring.
President Joi Ito, a globally recognized figure in decentralized systems and Chief Architect at Digital Garage, personally co-leads the university’s Web3 club alongside Professor Takagi. The club includes more than 250 student members who will all have access to Theta EdgeCloud for AI research, simulation, and student-led projects.
“Access to scalable computing infrastructure is increasingly important for advancing AI research and education,” said Professor Takagi. Theta EdgeCloud operates a global network of over 30,000 edge nodes, delivering on-demand GPU capacity at a fraction of traditional cloud costs. “We look forward to supporting its researchers and students with flexible, scalable GPU infrastructure as they develop and test the next generation of AI technologies,” said Mitch Liu, CEO and co-founder of Theta Labs.
