Two brothers from Texas pleaded guilty on Thursday for a violent home invasion in Minnesota, where they held a family at gunpoint for over eight hours and stole more than $8 million in cryptocurrency. Isiah and Raymond Garcia executed their plan in Grant, Minnesota, on September 19, 2025, after specifically traveling from their home state to carry out the robbery, according to a statement from the Justice Department.
During the prolonged ordeal, the brothers zip-tied the family and demanded access to the father’s crypto accounts. Isiah Garcia even forced the victim to travel to a northern Minnesota cabin to retrieve additional storage devices to complete the multi-million dollar transfer.
However, the family’s son managed to call 911, prompting the assailants to flee the scene. Consequently, investigators used items left behind to identify the brothers, leading to their arrest in the Houston area.
Each brother now faces a maximum of 20 years in federal prison for one count of interference with commerce by robbery. They agreed to pay more than $8 million in restitution, though sentencing dates have not yet been scheduled by U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery.
This case is part of a fast-growing wave of “wrench attacks” targeting crypto holders with physical violence. Meanwhile, last year, Remy St. Felix received a 47-year sentence for leading a violent home-invasion ring, marking the longest sentence in any U.S. cryptocurrency case.
France has also become a hotspot for such kidnappings, with prosecutors charging 88 people across a dozen investigations. Notably, victims have included Ledger co-founder David Balland, who was abducted and mutilated before police freed him.
