Bitcoin miners’ AI expansion faces sharp borrowing cost gaps

  • Bitcoin miners entering AI face varying borrowing costs as lenders tighten scrutiny on data center projects.
  • IREN secured financing at 6% and 9% rates across separate deals, illustrating cost disparities.
  • Google is backing $1.4 billion in lease obligations for Cipher Digital in exchange for warrants.
  • Publicly traded miners need roughly $50 billion to complete planned AI infrastructure, with IREN facing a $21.1 billion gap.

Bitcoin mining companies pivoting into Artificial Intelligence are facing sharply divergent borrowing costs as lenders scrutinize large-scale data center projects, according to the latest Miner Weekly newsletter from BlocksBridge Consulting. Securing major AI customers has been only part of the challenge, as miners must raise billions to purchase computing equipment, build facilities, and secure power infrastructure. “[B]ig lenders have become more selective about data center loans and decisions increasingly depend on the customer, the contract and the path to completion,” BlocksBridge said.

IREN illustrates how costs can vary. The company secured a $3.65 billion GPU financing package in June at a blended 6% interest rate, followed by a separate $2.4 billion arrangement in August at a fixed 9% rate. Though the two deals cover different projects, they show borrowing costs can differ even within one company. Financing arrangements can also carry costs beyond interest, as Google agreed to backstop $1.4 billion in lease obligations for Cipher Digital in exchange for warrants representing 5.4% of Cipher’s equity, which could dilute shareholders.

This funding pressure comes amid massive capital requirements. VanEck data cited by BlocksBridge showed miners’ debt surged roughly 500% from the second quarter of 2024 to last October, and a June 2026 analysis estimated publicly traded miners need about $50 billion to complete planned AI projects. IREN alone faces a $21.1 billion funding gap, while Riot Platforms and HIVE Digital need $7.2 billion and $4.6 billion, respectively. Meanwhile, capital requirements have grown even during the Bitcoin bear market as miners shift away from BTC mining amid deteriorating economics.
