Academy Bans AI Acting, Scripts From Oscar Eligibility

Academy bars AI acting and scripts from Oscar eligibility to protect human creativity.

  • The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially barred AI-generated acting and screenplays from Oscar eligibility.
  • Only performances by credited, consenting human actors and screenplays written by humans will qualify for awards.
  • The ruling comes as AI reshapes Hollywood, with recent examples including an AI-generated video of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt and a posthumous digital recreation of Val Kilmer.
  • Actors’ union SAG-AFTRA has warned that AI performers threaten jobs, while some actors have licensed their likenesses for AI use.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences ruled on Friday that AI-generated performances and screenplays will not qualify for Oscars, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. This definitive update ties awards eligibility directly to human creativity and performance. Only performances carried out by credited, consenting human actors will qualify for acting categories. Similarly, only screenplays written by humans can be considered for writing awards.

The Academy’s current rules, approved in April, had taken a more neutral stance on AI use in filmmaking. However, the new guidelines provide clear boundaries against digital recreations in eligible work. Consequently, the Academy can request details about AI usage to review edge cases involving human involvement.

Meanwhile, the entertainment industry is already being reshaped by Artificial Intelligence. An AI-generated video of Tom Cruise battling Brad Pitt gained viral attention, and AI was reportedly used to resurrect the late Val Kilmer for a role. These developments highlight the tension between innovation and artistic integrity.

Actors’ union SAG-AFTRA warns that AI-generated performers threaten jobs. Conversely, some actors have embraced licensed AI uses, creating digital voice replicas with companies like ElevenLabs. In an interview with Decrypt, actor T.J. Miller stated, “I’m not super scared that AI can take my job.”
