- 75 of the alleged offenders are currently held in pre-trial detention, with 12 cases under active investigation.
French authorities announced Friday that 88 people face charges for violent crimes targeting crypto holders, a national prosecutor said. Vanessa Perrée, the national prosecutor for organized crime, revealed the indictments after an extensive investigation by French law enforcement agencies.
Perrée stated in a LinkedIn post that 75 of the alleged offenders are being held in pre-trial detention. Consequently, the arrests relate to 12 distinct cases currently under specialized judicial investigation. Meanwhile, investigators found some alleged offenders were involved in multiple incidents.
The crimes, known as wrench attacks, use physical force to gain access to a victim’s assets. These attacks have specifically manifested as home invasions, kidnappings, and other extortion attempts against crypto owners. Consequently, the National Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime actively monitors the ongoing legal proceedings.
