A few days after unveiling several new virtual and augmented reality masks intended primarily to access the Metaverse, the virtual world that aspires to succeed cyberspace and the Internet as we know it today, Mark Zuckerberg made a series of predictions about the Metaverse’s trajectory.
“By the end of the decade there will be a billion users on the Metaverse each of whom will be spending hundreds of dollars to buy digital products such as clothes for their avatar, furniture for their virtual home, artwork for decorating boardrooms, etc.” said in an interview the Facebook co-founder who is now under the umbrella of Meta which also owns Instagram and WhatsApp as well as advanced technology and electronics development companies.
Meta dominates this sector with its Oculus Quest 2 headset having a 78% market share in 2021 global sales. But the VR market is still in its infancy and there are many who doubt that virtual reality technology can replace cyberspace in the short term.
Nevertheless, Mark Zuckerberg has proclaimed that the future lies in virtual worlds and is trying to gain dominance in the Metaverse similar to that of his social media platforms.
