- Trade tensions are causing volatility in cryptocurrency markets, with Bitcoin and other digital currencies experiencing double-digit price swings.
- Despite market turbulence, experts suggest economic uncertainty could accelerate institutional adoption of cryptocurrencies as a diversification strategy.
- DeFi protocols may benefit from international trade disruptions by offering borderless alternatives for financial services.
Global trade tensions have sent ripples through cryptocurrency markets, causing significant price volatility, but industry executives believe this instability could ultimately drive institutional crypto adoption. The turbulence began when US President Donald Trump announced sweeping import tariffs on April 2, contributing to an ongoing market decline that started earlier this year.
“The silver lining is that economic uncertainty has historically accelerated institutional interest in digital assets as a diversification strategy,” said David Siemer, co-founder and CEO of Wave Digital Assets, in comments to Cointelegraph. This perspective gained support when Trump paused implementation of some tariffs on April 9 while simultaneously threatening to raise levies on Chinese goods to 125%, causing both traditional markets and cryptocurrencies to jump approximately 8%.
Bitcoin’s Resilient Position
According to an April 7 Binance report, Bitcoin has shown “signs of resilience” during market turbulence, highlighting the cryptocurrency’s potential as a hedge against geopolitical disruption. Siemer further noted, “As traditional banking channels become entangled in geopolitical tensions, we’re witnessing increased demand for blockchain-based settlement solutions that operate outside conventional correspondent banking networks.”
The correlation between cryptocurrency and traditional markets remains strong, with Bitcoin’s price movements closely tracking the S&P 500 index. When Trump announced the partial pause in tariff implementation, the S&P 500 jumped more than 8%, while Bitcoin and the total cryptocurrency market capitalization rose by a similar amount, according to CoinMarketCap data.
DeFi’s Strategic Advantage
Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols may be particularly well-positioned to capitalize on international trade tensions. Nicholas Roberts-Huntley, co-founder and CEO of Concrete & Glow Finance, told Cointelegraph that DeFi offers a “neutral, borderless alternative for accessing credit, earning yield, and moving capital,” highlighting its “strategic value” during trade disruptions.
Despite potential long-term benefits, Aurelie Barthere, a research analyst at Nansen, cautioned that crypto prices will likely continue mirroring broader market trends in the near term. If market sell-offs persist, Barthere expects cryptocurrency to behave as “just a higher beta risk asset correlated with risk assets at the moment.”
