Thousands of users attended an Apple crypto event that was a scam

Taking advantage of Apple’s new iPhone announcement event, criminals staged a livestream that appeared to be an Apple event on cryptocurrencies. Unfortunately, thousands of people watched it without realizing the scam.

The “Apple Event Live: CEO of Apple Tim Cook: Apple & Metaverse in 2022“, displayed Tim Cook’s video of an earlier interview of Apple’s CEO on CNN in 2018.

At the same time, the stream had Bitcoin and Ethereum logos overlaying the CNN logo, with the text “Apple Crypto Event 2022” and “URGENT NEWS” grabbing users’ attention.

Those who clicked on the channel link called “Apple LIVE” ended up on a site that had nothing to do with Apple.

YouTube removed the stream after several hours because it violated the platform’s terms of use.
