- EV giant Tesla Inc. announced its Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology has surpassed 8 billion cumulative assisted miles globally.
- While under regulatory scrutiny, Tesla claims “vehicles with FSD traveled 5.3 million miles before a major collision, compared to a U.S. average of 660,000 miles.”
- Despite Tesla’s fleet of over a million FSD-enabled vehicles, Waymo states its 3,000-strong autonomous fleet has driven a cumulative 127 million fully autonomous miles.
Tesla revealed on Wednesday that its driver-assistance system, Full Self-Driving, has now been used for over 8 billion miles worldwide. The disclosure highlights the rapid adoption of a technology that promises eventual autonomy but remains under intense regulatory review.
However, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently scrutinizing FSD for alleged traffic law violations. This regulatory probe was cited in October and identified incidents where FSD-equipped vehicles proceeded through red traffic signals.
Consequently, Tesla is actively defending the system’s safety record on its website. The company released data stating its FSD vehicles experience a major collision every 5.3 million miles, a figure it claims is far above the national average.
Meanwhile, adoption continues to grow, with nearly 1.1 million global paid customers reported in late January. This vast user fleet generates immense real-world driving data for the EV manufacturer.
Yet Waymo recently provided a different benchmark for autonomous scale. The Alphabet subsidiary confirmed this week its fleet has driven over 127 million miles without human intervention, a key distinction from Tesla’s supervised system.
