Telegram Expands NFT Integration, Enables Gift Conversions on TON Network
Messaging platform Telegram has integrated non-fungible token (NFT) capabilities into its gift system, allowing users to convert digital presents into blockchain-based collectibles on The Open Network (TON).
NFT Conversion Mechanics
The latest platform update enables users to transform more than 20 existing digital gifts, including items like Jelly Bunny and Santa Hat, into NFTs. The conversion process requires Telegram Stars, the platform’s native currency linked to TON cryptocurrency.
Each converted gift receives:
- Custom artwork by Telegram designers
- Unique background colors
- Distinctive icons
- Individual identification numbers
TON Network Integration
The NFT feature builds upon Telegram’s growing Web3 presence. Previous initiatives include:
- TON Space, a self-custody wallet integrated within Telegram
- Channel owner revenue sharing program payable in TON
- Introduction of Telegram Stars, convertible to TON cryptocurrency
TON’s market performance reflects this increased integration. The cryptocurrency reached an all-time high of $8.25 in June 2023, though it has since adjusted to $5.79, maintaining a 165% annual gain.
The Open Network originated as Telegram’s internal project before regulatory challenges prompted its handover to community developers in 2020. Current market data from CoinGecko positions TON as the 15th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
According to TON core developer Dr. Awesome Doge in communications with Decrypt, the platform anticipates increased complexity in applications as companies seek to leverage Telegram’s user base for blockchain-based services.
The new NFT feature represents a strategic expansion of Telegram’s cryptocurrency ecosystem, connecting traditional messaging functionality with blockchain-based digital asset ownership.
