Struggling Bitcoin Miners May Pivot to AI: Wintermute

Bitcoin miners pivot to AI hosting and treasury management amid halving profit squeeze.

  • Diminishing returns from Bitcoin mining are forcing miners to explore new revenue avenues, such as pivoting to AI Hosting or actively managing their Bitcoin holdings.
  • Miners collectively hold close to 1% of the total Bitcoin supply, a legacy of the “HODL era,” and could generate yields through strategies like derivatives or lending protocols.
  • This market cycle is structurally different, with gross margins peaking at levels that previously marked bear market floors and transaction fee revenue being too episodic to fill the gap.

Bitcoin miners are facing a profitability crisis in the current market cycle, prompting market maker Wintermute to suggest they may need to pivot to Artificial Intelligence hosting or actively manage their Bitcoin treasury for yield generation. According to a blog post, miners have built extensive power infrastructure that is now highly valuable to the AI industry, which cannot easily replicate it. However, Wintermute describes this pivot as a “drastic and capital-intensive step” for a business model it calls structurally rigid.

Consequently, miners are exploring ways to make their Bitcoin holdings work as a financial asset. Wintermute argues that the “full toolkit of treasury management remains largely untapped,” with options ranging from active strategies like monetizing market risk through derivatives to passive ones like deploying BTC into lending protocols to earn interest. Meanwhile, mining giant MARA Holdings has signaled its intent to sell some Bitcoin to pivot toward Ai technology, as data shows publicly listed miners have sold over 15,000 Bitcoin since October.

The firm notes that, for the first time in a four-year cycle, Bitcoin has failed to deliver the price return needed to offset revenue cuts from the halving. Gross margins have peaked at levels that previously marked bear market floors, and energy costs continue to squeeze profitability. Wintermute concludes that this squeeze represents a “healthy shakeup” within Bitcoin’s design that will ultimately make the mining industry more efficient.
