Stripe-backed Tempo blockchain launches for AI agents

Tempo unveiled its long-awaited blockchain on Wednesday, backed by heavyweights Stripe and Paradigm, as it pivots to a new frontier: payments for Artificial Intelligence. The project now aims to build “machine” payment infrastructure, allowing AI agents to autonomously transact.

“Agents can already write code, coordinate services, retrieve data, and execute complex workflows across the internet,” Tempo stated. However, these systems lack a standardized way to pay for resources like computing power or datasets.

Consequently, Tempo introduced its Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). This system enables AI agents to conduct microtransactions within sessions before bulk-settling them, which enhances scalability.

This launch exemplifies a significant crypto industry trend. For instance, former Ethereum Foundation co-director Tomasz Stańczak recently advocated for Ethereum to use AI in core development.

Meanwhile, other platforms like Near and Render are also shifting their focus toward AI. Consequently, Tempo is positioning itself at this critical intersection of technology.

Excitement has grown, fueled by its impressive talent acquisitions. Last month, it welcomed Farcaster co-founders Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan and former Ethereum Foundation researcher Dankrad Feist.

Ultimately, the project has forged major partnerships with Anthropic, OpenAI, Mastercard, and VISA. This positions Tempo’s blockchain as a potentially vital financial rail for the emerging AI agent economy.
