S&P Global to acquire blockchain security firm OpenZeppelin.

  • S&P Global has agreed to acquire blockchain security firm OpenZeppelin to bolster its digital asset risk assessment capabilities.
  • OpenZeppelin’s open-source smart contracts have facilitated over $37 trillion in value transfers, with more than 900 security engagements completed.
  • The platform will remain free and publicly maintained on GitHub, operating as a separate S&P Global business unit under existing CEO Demian Brener.
  • The acquisition follows S&P Global leading a strategic investment in crypto data provider Kaiko, extending its Series B to $110 million.

S&P Global, the financial data and ratings giant, announced on Thursday its agreement to acquire blockchain security company OpenZeppelin, according to a press release. The deal aims to expand the firm’s digital asset capabilities, specifically in smart contract and onchain risk assessment.

“Our digital assets strategy centers on bringing trusted data, benchmarks and transparent risk assessment to markets as they move onchain,” said S&P Global ratings president Yann Le Pallec. He emphasized that OpenZeppelin would enhance the company’s ability to evaluate onchain technology risks.

Founded in 2015, OpenZeppelin develops open-source smart contract software and provides security assessments for blockchain projects and financial institutions. The announcement notes that its smart contracts have facilitated more than $37 trillion in value transferred, and the company has completed over 900 security engagements.

Consequently, OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as a separate S&P Global business unit, with CEO Demian Brener remaining at the helm and reporting to Le Pallec. Its contracts library and other open-source applications will stay free and publicly maintained on GitHub.

Meanwhile, earlier this week S&P Global led a strategic investment in Kaiko, a Paris-based crypto market data provider. The move extended Kaiko’s Series B funding to $110 million as it expands data infrastructure for tokenized financial markets. Financial terms of the OpenZeppelin acquisition were not disclosed, and the transaction remains subject to closing conditions.
