- Soongsil University’s HUMANE Lab has joined Theta’s academic network, becoming its 36th member.
- The lab is using Theta’s decentralized GPU network to power compute-intensive AI research focused on combating misinformation and bias.
- The partnership supports award-winning work, including a system that won 1st place in the FEVER 2026 challenge for multimodal fact verification.
- Professor Kunwoo Park highlighted the flexible, cost-effective access to GPU resources as crucial for the lab’s research.
The HUMANE Lab at Soongsil University recently became the 36th academic partner to join THETA Network‘s research consortium. Led by Professor Kunwoo Park, the lab leverages Theta’s decentralized EdgeCloud infrastructure for advanced large language model research aimed at solving societal problems.
Their work specifically targets issues like misinformation, bias, and fairness through AI. Consequently, the lab’s research spans computational social science, ethics, and NLP for social good.
A primary focus is building systems for multimodal fact verification, which is incredibly resource-intensive. However, their FEVER 2026 system demonstrated success by coordinating multiple models in a complex, four-stage process.
This demanding computational workload is exactly what Theta EdgeCloud is designed to support. The platform provides scalable GPU power from a global network of over 30,000 nodes.
There is also a strong philosophical alignment between the two organizations. HUMANE Lab champions open large language models, which aligns with Theta’s decentralized and transparent infrastructure model.
“Our research depends on access to substantial compute for training and evaluating large language models at scale,” stated Professor Kunwoo Park. He added that Theta EdgeCloud gives our team the flexible, cost-effective GPU resources we need to push our work forward.
As LLMs become more embedded in daily information consumption, research into trustworthy AI has never been more critical. Meanwhile, this partnership aims to accelerate the development of human-centered and verifiable AI systems.
