Sonic Labs has named Evan Owens as its new Director of Business Development. This leadership change marks a key phase in Sonic’s growth strategy. Owens brings 15 years of experience as a founder, investor, and operator to the role. He will lead efforts to develop Sonic’s business strategy, build a business development team, and create partnerships to grow the company’s ecosystem.
Owens joined the crypto industry in 2017 with Aenigma Capital, a digital asset fund. He later managed business development at Flipside Crypto, where he collaborated with protocols, developers, and institutions to enhance ecosystem growth. His past partnerships include work with the Golden State Warriors and Ticketmaster through his involvement with Pogoseat, as well as deals with platforms like Aptos, Sei, LayerZero, and SushiSwap.
Under Mitchell’s leadership at Sonic, Owens aims to turn Sonic’s technical strengths into business success and a strong network for builders. Owens said, “Crypto is at an inflection point. Many Layer 1s are still searching for their North Star. At Sonic, we get to define it.” He plans to identify key industries and partners to accelerate Sonic’s growth and ensure builders receive support in engineering, fundraising, marketing, and business development.
Owens also highlighted the need for clear communication within the ecosystem. “The goal is clear: Sonic needs to establish a scalable BD strategy, sustained builder inflow, a growing DeFi ecosystem, and durable revenue streams. We can not accomplish this without smooth communications, follow-through and execution from our team,” he said. Owens is working to align communications between Sonic and its application developers.
Looking ahead, Owens sees strong potential in expanding global partnerships and attracting institutional interest, particularly in tokenization and real-world assets. Before joining the industry, Owens spent years as a sailboat captain, an experience he compares to the dynamic crypto space. He is now based in Oregon and focused on propelling Sonic’s next stage of growth.
