- Sky posted record Q1 2026 revenue of nearly $124 million, its highest since launching in 2017.
- Despite the financial success, its governance token’s value declined by approximately 2.4% following the announcement.
- The protocol attributes its performance to growing institutional demand for onchain yield, leading to a strategic shift towards building a $150 million solvency reserve over token buybacks.
The Sky Frontier Foundation released the Q1 2026 results for the $13 billion lending protocol on Wednesday, revealing its most profitable quarter ever. The decentralized finance leader generated nearly $124 million in gross revenue and almost $61 million in net revenue during the first three months of the year.
However, the market reaction was unexpectedly negative. Sky’s governance token, which trades at almost a $2 billion market value, declined around 2.4% after the results were publicized.
Consequently, this paradox highlights a strategic pivot within the decentralized autonomous organization. The protocol’s record earnings are primarily driven by institutional interest in risk-adjusted onchain yield, particularly through its USDS stablecoin.
Meanwhile, Sky is part of a broader DeFi trend to attract traditional finance. Protocols are repackaging products and seeking risk ratings from firms like S&P Global Ratings and Fitch to appeal to institutional allocators.
In fact, the foundation directly credits this institutional demand for the blow-out quarter. “From our understanding, this outperformance in USDS growth was driven by growing institutional demand for risk-adjusted yield onchain,” the foundation stated.
Furthermore, the protocol produced a $46 million surplus, a significant reversal from a $13.5 million net loss in the same quarter last year. This surplus represents revenue exceeding a target set by governance participants.
Nevertheless, token holders are not seeing immediate rewards. Governance recently approved shifting surplus funds to build a $150 million solvency reserve instead of directing them to buybacks and staking rewards.
This move prioritizes long-term resilience over short-term distributions, potentially explaining the token’s muted price action. “The message we observed from Sky Governance is that Sky Protocol is building for long-term resilience over short-term distributions,” the foundation said.
