- Christopher Harborne, a Tether stakeholder, gave Nigel Farage a previously undisclosed $6.7 million personal gift in 2024.
- The gift, intended for Farage’s security, was separate from Harborne’s millions in public donations to the Reform UK party.
- The revelation follows a recent UK ban on cryptocurrency political donations due to transparency and interference concerns.
- Farage has positioned himself as a cryptocurrency advocate, calling for tax cuts and a national Bitcoin reserve.
- Another overseas crypto figure, Ben Delo of Bitmex, also made a multimillion-dollar donation to Reform UK.
In 2024, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage received an undisclosed $6.7 million personal gift from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire holding a 12% stake in the Tether stablecoin issuer, according to reports in The Guardian. Farage later told The Daily Telegraph the payment was to cover his security costs.
Consequently, this gift was structured separately from Harborne’s £12 million (approximately $15.3 million) in declared donations to the Reform UK party. His previous public contributions included a record £9 million donation last year and a further £3 million revealed in March.
However, revelations emerge weeks after the UK government banned crypto asset political financing. This followed the government-commissioned Rycroft review into foreign electoral interference.
Before the ban, Reform UK was the only major UK party to accept crypto donations. Responding to the moratorium, Farage accused Labour ministers of being “out of touch.”
Meanwhile, Harborne isn’t the only overseas crypto figure funding the party. Hong Kong-based BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo also donated $5.4 million to Reform UK. Delo had previously pleaded guilty to US Bank Secrecy Act violations and paid a $10 million criminal fine.
Farage consistently champions cryptocurrency, calling for lower capital gains taxes and a national Bitcoin reserve. His alignment with major crypto donors continues to fuel political and financial scrutiny in the UK.
