Scottsdale Police Department reports that city residents have lost more than $6 million to cryptocurrency scams so far in 2024. These figures only include incidents officially reported to authorities.
Police have started an awareness campaign after seeing a significant increase in local scam activity. Officials note the actual dollar amount lost is likely higher since many victims may not reach out to law enforcement.
The scams often begin when victims receive unexpected contact by text message, email, or phone. The scammer instructs the victim to deposit funds into a Bitcoin ATM to resolve supposed urgent issues. Detective Brennan stated, “Unfortunately, victims will respond to unsolicited texts, emails and phone calls, convincing the victim to put money into Bitcoin ATMs for various reasons.”
A Bitcoin ATM allows users to buy cryptocurrency with cash or card. Scammers use these machines because transfers are difficult to trace and recover. Police recommend anyone targeted by these methods should immediately contact local police or file a case on the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center website.
The public awareness campaign aims to educate the community on warning signs and prevention measures. Officials are also reminding people to be cautious and not respond to unsolicited requests for money or codes.
City authorities stress the importance of prompt reporting. Fast action may help prevent further financial loss and potentially assist in investigations.
