Reddit in Talks to Integrate World ID Iris Scanning Verification

The World ID aims to verify users as “unique humans” using biometric data from eye scans.

  • World is in discussions with Reddit to introduce its iris-scanning World ID system on the platform.
  • The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) reviewed World over data protection concerns and continues to monitor compliance.
  • Past incidents included bad actors earning around $700,000 by purchasing World IDs from vulnerable people in Berlin.
  • World has partnered with Tinder, Razor, and VISA, and launched services in the UK and US this year.

World, a company owned by Sam Altman that specializes in iris scanning, is negotiating with Reddit to introduce the World ID system to the social platform. This system would use biometric verification to confirm that users are real people.

According to a report by Semafor, the World ID requires users to scan their eyes for verification. The company claims this step certifies each user as a “unique human.” World also operates under the name World Network, having rebranded from Worldcoin last year. Recently, it announced partnerships with Tinder, Razor, and payment provider Visa. The firm launched in the UK and US in 2025.

Before entering the UK market, World came under review by the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in 2023, which stated that it had opened an inquiry into the company. An ICO spokesperson told Protos that the agency had “scrutinized World while clearly setting out our expectations to ensure compliance.” They also said that World made some changes after these engagements.

The ICO emphasized that World must show at all times that it handles biometric data, like eye scans, in line with UK data protection laws. The ICO warned that if compliance lapses occur, it would “consider further action.”

Last year in Berlin, people exploited the World ID system. According to reports, a group earned about $700,000 by paying homeless individuals and drug users for their eye scans, collecting the associated cryptocurrency rewards. Details can be found in this separate investigation.

World aims to reach 1 billion sign-ups for its World ID network but currently remains far from this target. Protos has contacted representatives from both World and Reddit for additional comments.
