Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim met with former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to discuss cryptocurrency developments and regional issues, as Malaysia prepares to lead ASEAN’s digital economy initiatives in 2025.

The high-level meeting, which took place on February 2nd in Kuala Lumpur, brought together key regional figures to address the growing importance of digital assets in Southeast Asia’s financial landscape. Thaksin, who chairs the ASEAN Chairman’s informal advisory group, contributed insights on cryptocurrency regulation and development within the ASEAN framework.

The discussions expanded later in the day to include George Yeo, Singapore’s former Foreign Minister, potentially indicating a coordinated approach to regional crypto policies. This trilateral engagement suggests ASEAN is positioning itself more actively in the global digital asset space.

Malaysia’s appointment of Thaksin as an informal adviser in December 2023 marks a strategic move to leverage experienced regional leaders in shaping ASEAN’s digital economy policies. As the incoming ASEAN Chair for 2025, Malaysia’s leadership role will be crucial in establishing regional cryptocurrency frameworks and standards.

The meeting’s timing is significant as it coincides with Malaysia’s fifth stint as ASEAN Chair since the organization’s founding in 1967. Previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015 have seen Malaysia guide significant regional initiatives, but 2025’s term may be particularly focused on digital transformation and cryptocurrency integration in Southeast Asian economies.
