On Tuesday, PayPal Holdings Inc. announced a partnership with Meta Platforms Inc. to integrate PayPal checkout into Meta’s fast-growing Muse AI agent. The move gives Muse another major payments option as the AI agent builds shopping capabilities. “We’re excited to partner with Meta to enable PayPal customers to seamlessly shop and check out using their Muse personal AI agents across PayPal merchants worldwide,” the payments company said in a post on X.
The partnership follows Meta’s integration with Stripe’s Link at Muse’s launch, and a subsequent deal with Shopify to enable agentic checkout using Shop Pay across all Shopify stores, according to CEO Tobi Lütke. However, Amazon has blocked Muse from shopping on its site, limiting the agent’s reach.
Muse, launched on Sept. 8, differs from conventional chatbots by taking actions on users’ behalf, such as booking travel and completing transactions. It can continue working in the background and ask for user approval before sensitive actions like purchases.
The growing list of partners matters for AI shopping agents because their usefulness depends on how many merchants and payment systems allow them to transact. According to Reuters, Muse recorded 2.8 million downloads across the U.S. and Canada during its first 12 days, climbing to the No. 1 most-downloaded free app in Apple’s U.S. App Store. A WSJ report noted that Truist analyst Youssef Squali believes Muse could generate an additional $28.5 billion in revenue for Meta by 2030 as heavier users adopt paid tiers.
PayPal has also been preparing for agentic commerce by supporting the WebMCP standard to make websites easier for AI assistants to discover and connect with checkout. At the time of writing, PYPL stock traded more than 2% higher, while SHOP stock rose over 7%. Retail sentiment around PYPL remained bearish on Stocktwits, with the stock down nearly 8% year-to-date.
