OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar assured staff during an internal meeting Wednesday that the Artificial Intelligence firm is set to go public by 2027, with an earlier debut possible if financial inflection accelerates. Friar described the initial public offering not as an end goal but as a routine fundraising milestone, citing the company’s $122-billion capital raise in March as a source of operational flexibility, according to reports.
OpenAI confidentially submitted its IPO paperwork to federal regulators in June, while rival Anthropic has also filed confidentially and begun investor discussions. Friar told employees: “As you know we are confidentially under file, and Anthropic is also under file. There is a chance they pull the cover off that confidential file in the coming weeks and become public in September. That’s OK, we are running our own race.”
OpenAI reported second-quarter revenue of $6.7 billion, an 18% increase over the prior quarter, with its annualized run rate topping $40 billion. Anthropic projected preliminary second-quarter revenue of $11.5 billion and a $65 billion annualized run rate. Meanwhile, Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser stepped down after eight months, following the exit of long-time executive Brad Lightcap and product chief Fidji Simo in July.
Top executives, including CEO Sam Altman and President Greg Brockman, are focused on stabilizing partner confidence amid low-cost AI alternatives. Brockman noted that OpenAI‘s intense public profile subjects ordinary corporate transitions to heightened scrutiny. For ongoing coverage, follow this publication on Google News.
