- OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, a sandboxed space for health conversations with optional connections to health apps.
- The feature connects to apps like Apple Health, Function, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, AllTrails, Instacart, and Peloton for personalized responses.
- Health chats are isolated, not used to train foundation models, and include purpose-built encryption and extra protections.
- The rollout excludes the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the U.K., and comes amid lawsuits and reporting on harmful AI health guidance.
OpenAI announced on Wednesday the launch of ChatGPT Health, a dedicated environment for health and wellness conversations that users can optionally link to medical records and wellness apps. The feature is available to users on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the U.K., and aims to deliver tailored responses, lab test explanations, nutrition advice, meal ideas, and workout suggestions, the company said in a statement (https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-health/).
The sandboxed experience allows explicit connections to apps including Apple Health, Function, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, AllTrails, Instacart, and Peloton. OpenAI said users who start health-related chats in the regular product are prompted to switch into Health for added protections (https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-health/).
OpenAI listed layered privacy and security measures for the Health space. Conversations operate in a silo with dedicated memory, use “purpose-built” encryption and isolation, and Health chats are not used to train OpenAI’s foundation models. Apps must request explicit permission to access health data and meet OpenAI’s privacy and security requirements before inclusion (https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-health/).
OpenAI noted it evaluated the underlying model against clinical standards using HealthBench, a benchmark revealed in May 2025, and said, “This evaluation-driven approach helps ensure the model performs well on the tasks people actually need help with, including explaining lab results in accessible language, preparing questions for an appointment, interpreting data from wearables and wellness apps, and summarizing care instructions.” (https://openai.com/index/healthbench/).
The launch arrives as reporting and legal actions raise concerns about AI health guidance. An investigation from The Guardian flagged misleading health information from another AI, and news reports note OpenAI and Character.AI are facing several lawsuits; one report described a fatal overdose after a user followed ChatGPT medical advice (https://www.sfgate.com/tech/article/calif-teen-chatgpt-drug-advice-fatal-overdose-21266718.php).
