Off the Grid NFT Sales Surge as Steam Expansion Nears in June

Off the Grid enables real cryptocurrency trading of in-game items on its Avalanche blockchain mainnet for a small group of players.

  • Rare items in Off the Grid’s marketplace have sold for thousands of dollars, with ultra-rare items held back by collectors.
  • The game plans to launch on Steam in June, despite the platform’s ban on blockchain games.
  • Ethereum-based MMORPG Ember Sword has shut down due to funding shortages, reflecting a broader trend of crypto game closures.
  • Other industry updates include Ubisoft changing features on Champions Tactics, Yield Guild Games launching LOL Land, and FIFA Rivals opening pre-registration on Android.

Off the Grid, a battle royale shooter game powered by Avalanche, has started migrating users from its test network onto the GUNZ mainnet. This move allows a small segment—about 0.13% of the game’s 16.5 million registered players—to trade in-game items for GUN tokens with real cryptocurrency value.

Recent high-value sales on this new marketplace have included a Prankster tactical vest for $2,393 and a ZipperMouth mask for $1,100. Rare and ultra-rare items, such as the Pioneer and Legacy weapons, remain in the hands of collectors who are waiting for upcoming updates, with hopes of seeing future sales reaching five-figure amounts.

Off the Grid plans to expand to Steam in June, despite Steam’s 2021 ban on games with blockchain features. Developer Gunzilla Games has not released details on how its blockchain-powered systems will function on Steam or on PlayStation and Xbox, which also restrict cryptocurrency features.

Meanwhile, Ember Sword, an MMORPG based on Ethereum, announced its closure due to lack of funding. Developer Bright Star Studios reported it could not secure further investment, despite attracting big-name investors and advisors during the 2021 Metaverse boom.

Although players pledged a total of $203 million during a land sale event, the actual funds raised were reportedly much lower. Reception to its July 2024 closed beta was weak, and the price of its EMBER token has dropped more than 99% from its peak.

This shutdown is one of several recent collapses in the blockchain gaming sector, including games like Nyan Heroes, Blast Royale, Deadrop, and The Mystery Society.

Other news from the week saw Ubisoft relaunching its blockchain game on Steam under the title Champions Tactics: Reforged, removing NFT marketplace features.

Yield Guild Games launched LOL Land, a board game experience, on the Ethereum layer-2 network Abstract.

Mythical Games also opened pre-registration for its blockchain soccer title FIFA Rivals on the Android Play Store.
