Nvidia Denies Claims of Blackwell Chip Smuggling to China

Nvidia Refutes Allegations of DeepSeek Utilizing Prohibited Blackwell AI Chips: Report

  • NVIDIA denies allegations that its restricted Blackwell chips have reached Chinese AI startup DeepSeek.
  • No evidence or credible tips have surfaced to support claims of Blackwell chip smuggling into China.
  • The U.S. has imposed export bans on these chips to limit China’s access to advanced Ai technology.
  • Nvidia states it investigates all reports of potential violations, despite calling such smuggling “far-fetched.”

Nvidia has addressed recent reports suggesting that Chinese Artificial Intelligence company DeepSeek is using its restricted Blackwell chips, which are banned from export to China under current U.S. regulations. The company stated there is no evidence to support the claim that these advanced chips have been smuggled into the country.

According to a recent report, a spokesperson from Nvidia explained, “We haven’t seen any substantiation or received tips of ‘phantom datacenters’ constructed to deceive us and our OEM partners, then deconstructed, smuggled, and reconstructed somewhere else.” The spokesperson added that the notion of such smuggling is unlikely but stated, “we pursue any tip we receive.”

The U.S. government restricts the export of Nvidia‘s Blackwell chips to China as part of its effort to safeguard its competitive edge in artificial intelligence technology. These chips are designed for advanced AI applications and are sought after by companies developing large language models and similar tools.

Questions about the use of restricted chips in China surfaced after a recent report claimed that DeepSeek had obtained Nvidia hardware for developing a new AI model. Nvidia maintains that it has not identified any credible cases of smuggling or unauthorized use of its Blackwell series in China as of now.

The company emphasized its ongoing process for monitoring and investigating any claims regarding export violations in order to comply with U.S. government regulations.
