Nintendo has officially revealed its next-generation console, the Switch 2, featuring significant hardware improvements and a robust game lineup. The new console boasts a larger LCD screen, updated Joy-Con controllers with mouse functionality, dual USB-C ports, an improved kickstand, 4K TV output capability, and 1080p resolution at 120 frames per second in handheld mode.
The launch will be accompanied by several high-profile game releases, with Mario Kart World arriving on June 5 as a launch title. This new entry in the racing series transforms the traditional Mario Kart formula by placing over 30 tracks within an open-world environment that players can freely explore alone or with friends.
Also launching on June 5 are enhanced versions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. These upgraded editions will feature improved resolution, smoother frame rates, additional save slots, faster loading times, and integration with the new Zelda Notes app. Current owners can purchase upgrades rather than rebuying the full games, with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members receiving the upgrades for free.
Exclusive Titles Showcase New Hardware Features
The Switch 2’s lineup continues with Donkey Kong Bananza on July 17, an open-world 3D adventure reminiscent of Donkey Kong 64 with highly destructible environments. Super Mario Party Jamboree NS2 Edition follows in July 2025, featuring exclusive minigames that utilize the new controllers’ mouse functionality and optional camera features.
Other announced titles include Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (Q4 2025), Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (2025), and Pokémon Legends Z-A (2025). In a surprising addition, From Software will release The Duskbloods, a Switch 2 exclusive with Victorian horror aesthetics reminiscent of Bloodborne, scheduled for 2026.
Multiplatform Games Join the Library
Beyond Nintendo’s exclusive offerings, the Switch 2 will support numerous multiplatform titles previously unavailable on Nintendo hardware. Games like Elden Ring, Final Fantasy VII, Cyberpunk 2077, and Star Wars Outlaws are all coming to the platform, significantly expanding the console’s library beyond Nintendo’s first-party offerings.
The Nintendo Switch 2’s technical capabilities allow it to run these demanding titles while maintaining the hybrid handheld/console functionality that made the original Switch successful. This combination of exclusive Nintendo franchises and major multiplatform releases positions the Switch 2 as a versatile gaming platform for both dedicated Nintendo fans and broader gaming audiences.
