- Netflix announced a new comedy film titled “One Attempt Remaining,” starring Jennifer Garner, about a divorced couple trying to recover cryptocurrency worth millions by recalling their lost password.
- The couple faces a 48-hour deadline to unlock a cryptocurrency wallet containing $35 million before the claim expires, according to a plot detail involving a US SEC notice.
- The film reflects real challenges in cryptocurrency security, similar to cases like former crypto executive Stefan Thomas, who lost access to 7,002 Bitcoin (~$640 million).
- Hollywood films rarely focus on cryptocurrency, with only a few related features such as “Money Plane” (2020), “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King” (2022), and the upcoming “Going Infinite.”
- One notable real-life incident involves James Howells, who lost a hardware wallet with 8,000 Bitcoin in a UK landfill and has been denied permission to search the site.
Netflix has revealed a new comedy movie titled “One Attempt Remaining” that stars Jennifer Garner. The film centers on a couple who divorced but must reunite to recover a password securing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency they won together on a cruise. The story unfolds as they race against time to access the wallet.
According to What’s on Netflix, a notice from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is part of the plot. The couple has 48 hours to retrieve $35 million from the cryptocurrency wallet before the opportunity expires.
The movie’s title highlights a dilemma common in the crypto world, similar to the situation faced by Stefan Thomas. Thomas, a former chief technology officer of Ripple, forgot the password to an IronKey hard drive holding 7,002 Bitcoin, valued at about $640 million at present. The device allows only 10 incorrect password attempts before erasing the data. Thomas had made eight tries by December and had not publicly regained access.
Cryptocurrency has occasionally appeared in films and documentaries but has seldom been the main focus of feature films. Notable exceptions include the 2020 film “Money Plane,” the 2022 documentary “Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King,” which examined the QuadrigaCX exchange collapse, and the upcoming “Going Infinite,” based on the fall of crypto exchange FTX and its former CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried.
One widely known real-life case is that of James Howells, a Welsh entrepreneur who lost a hard drive containing private keys to 8,000 Bitcoin. The drive was reportedly thrown into a UK landfill in 2013. Howells has sought legal permission for years to search the site for the lost wallet but has nearly exhausted all legal options as of March 2025.
