Tesla CEO Elon Musk is appealing to long-term retail shareholders after the company’s disappointing second-quarter results put it on pace for its worst week of 2026. In an interview with The Economist, Musk stated, “There are many investors who do take a long-term view…I’m a big fan of the retail investors.”
Tesla shares slid 16% this week after missing earnings estimates, with adjusted Q2 earnings of $0.33 per share versus the $0.54 consensus. Consequently, retail sentiment on Stocktwits flipped to ‘bearish’ from ‘bullish’ levels amid a 100% jump in message volumes.
Meanwhile, SpaceX has also struggled, with its shares down 5% this week and headed for a third consecutive weekly decline just over a month after going public. Musk told The Economist that “one of the reasons I took SpaceX public is so that the public could participate.”
RBC Capital maintained an ‘Outperform’ rating on Tesla, noting that the quarter’s key takeaway was the deepening SpaceX integration across Terafab, Starlink, and CyberCab. Musk acknowledged this during the earnings call, saying, “There’s more and more overlap, especially with Terafab.”
Roth Capital expects Tesla to invest about $30 billion over two years to scale the Terafab venture in Texas to 100,000 wafer starts per month. TD Cowen cut its price target to $460 while retaining a ‘Buy’ rating after Tesla missed expectations.
