Micron vs AMD: Cheaper Valuation Makes It Better AI Buy

Micron’s lower valuation and strong AI memory demand challenge AMD’s premium pricing.

  • Micron stock valuation sits well below AMD, creating a compelling entry point for AI exposure
  • Micron has secured multi-year customer agreements for high-bandwidth memory, boosting revenue visibility
  • AMD continues to grow data center sales but trades at a premium that leaves less room for error
  • Micron currently leads in return on equity and current ratio, signaling stronger operational efficiency

In the ongoing Micron stock vs AMD comparison, AI investors are focusing on two chipmakers riding the same memory and compute wave at very different valuations. Micron currently sits at a lower multiple than AMD, and that gap defines the debate over which is the better buy.

Micron benefits from unusually strong demand for its high-bandwidth memory chips used in AI servers, with hyperscalers ramping up spending. Sanjay Mehrotra, Chairman, President and CEO of Micron, stated: “AI-driven demand is here and it is accelerating.” The company has also signed a string of multi-year agreements, giving it more revenue visibility than in past memory cycles. Meanwhile, AMD is growing through data center sales of its EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators, with the Helios platform just starting its ramp.

Dr. Lisa Su, AMD Chair and CEO, noted: “We delivered an outstanding first quarter, driven by accelerating demand for AI infrastructure.” On liquidity, Micron‘s current ratio sits comfortably above AMD‘s, providing a cushion in a cyclical industry, while return on equity also favors Micron by a wide margin. AMD‘s lower current ratio suggests it puts more cash to work rather than holding it. Whether Micron stock is the better buy comes down to the investor’s goal: cheaper access to AI memory demand with strong margins versus broader AI compute exposure at a valuation that leaves less room for error. As long as AMD‘s valuation stays rich next to Micron‘s, the case for choosing Micron is likely to hold.
