META to Build $10B Indiana Data Center for US AI Push

Meta's $10B U.S. AI data center contrasts rivals' India investments, draws environmental scrutiny.

  • Meta is investing $10 billion in a new U.S. data center in Indiana to deliver 1 gigawatt of power for its AI operations.
  • This move is a strategic departure from tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, which announced a combined $53 billion investment in India last December.
  • The massive facility, expected by 2027-28, aligns with the “Make in America” policy but faces criticism over its significant energy demand and environmental impact.

Meta announced on Wednesday it will build a $10 billion data center in Indiana, U.S., to secure a massive 1-gigawatt power supply for its Artificial Intelligence ambitions. This major investment signals a strong shift of focus and capital to domestic infrastructure.

Consequently, this creates a notable divergence from other tech giants’ strategies. Amazon and Microsoft pledged $53 billion for data centers in Indian cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad last December.

However, Meta is firmly committing to U.S. development and its November pledge to invest $600 billion in national infrastructure and jobs. This domestic build aligns with the White House’s “Make in America” policy framework.

The facility’s energy needs are immense, equivalent to powering 800,000 homes. Therefore, U.S. power grid firms stand to benefit significantly from the required infrastructure upgrades.

Rachel Peterson, Meta’s Vice President for data centers, told Reuters the Indiana site could be operational by 2027-28. “We’re going to be pushing a lot of capacity through construction very quickly at this site,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the project faces opposition from environmental activists concerned about local power reliability and contributions to global warming. Meta confirmed it has already secured contracts with power suppliers to meet its aggressive timeline.
