- Jammu and Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha warns that cryptocurrency is being used for drug trafficking as dark web becomes the new marketplace.
- Security forces have succeeded in curbing terrorism in Kashmir Valley, but attempts are being made to revive it in Jammu region.
- J&K Police must become a future-ready force with advanced technology to combat emerging challenges in terrorism and crime.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha warned on Friday that cryptocurrency transactions are increasingly being used in narcotics trade as the dark web emerges as a new marketplace for drug trafficking. The statement came during his address at the passing out parade at Police Training School in Manigam, Ganderbal district of central Kashmir.
Sinha emphasized that drug smuggling threats have evolved beyond conventional methods. “Smugglers and narco-terrorists are changing their communication methods daily. The dark web is becoming the new marketplace for drug trade, with cryptocurrency replacing conventional transactions,” he stated.
Technology Challenges and Security Response
The Lieutenant Governor highlighted how modern technology is being misused for organized crime, leading to increased cybercrime incidents. He urged the police force to implement continuous innovation strategies to stay ahead of criminals.
“In such a situation, you have to implement a policy of continuous innovation to remain a step ahead of the criminals,” Sinha advised the newly trained officers, assuring that both the J&K administration and central government fully support security forces in their mission.
Sinha praised security agencies for their progress in controlling terrorism in the Kashmir Valley but expressed concern over attempts to revive terrorist activities in the previously more peaceful Jammu region. “It is the collective resolve of J&K Police and other security forces to make both Jammu and Kashmir regions terror-free,” he affirmed.
Building a Future-Ready Police Force
The LG stressed that the Jammu and Kashmir Police must transform into a technologically equipped, future-ready force capable of addressing emerging security challenges. He acknowledged the unique dual responsibility that sets J&K Police apart from other forces in India.
“J&K Police is very different from other forces in the country because it has a huge responsibility. On one hand, our brave soldiers face terrorism, and on the other, they have the responsibility to maintain law and order and help in creating a conducive atmosphere for development,” Sinha explained.
In recent years, the J&K Police has demonstrated commendable performance in real-time intelligence sharing and swift response operations. Looking ahead, Sinha predicted that successful anti-terror operations and law enforcement would increasingly depend on effective technology utilization, combined with special strategy and specific intelligence to decisively counter terrorism.
