LG Sinha: Cryptocurrency Used in Narco Dealings, Dark Web Emerging

  • Cryptocurrency is being utilized for narcotics transactions as the dark web becomes a new marketplace for drug trade, according to J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
  • Security forces have largely contained terrorism in Kashmir, but there are attempts to revive it in the previously peaceful Jammu region.
  • J&K Police must become future-ready with technological capabilities to counter emerging challenges in terrorism and crime.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha warned on Friday that cryptocurrency is now being used for narcotics transactions as the dark web emerges as a new marketplace for drug trade. Speaking at the Police Training School graduation ceremony in Ganderbal district’s Manigam area, Sinha emphasized the urgent need for security forces to adapt to rapidly changing technologies to counter evolving threats.

New Technologies Fueling Criminal Activities

“The threat of drug smuggling has not remained conventional now. Smugglers and narco-terrorists are changing their communication methods daily,” Sinha explained during his address to police graduates. He noted that criminal organizations are increasingly leveraging digital platforms for illegal activities.

The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that technology misuse has expanded organized crime and increased cybercrime incidents. “In such a situation, you have to implement a policy of continuous innovation to remain a step ahead of the criminals,” he advised the newly trained officers, assuring that both the J&K administration and central government fully support security forces.

Shifting Terrorism Landscape

While commending security forces for significantly reducing terrorism in Kashmir Valley, Sinha expressed concern about emerging threats elsewhere. “Attempts are being made to revive terrorism in the Jammu region, which was peaceful in comparison,” he stated, expressing confidence in the police force’s ability to replicate their Kashmir success in Jammu.

Sinha called for collaborative action among all security agencies to counter terrorist activities supported by neighboring countries. He emphasized that J&K Police carries unique responsibilities compared to other forces in India, simultaneously confronting terrorism while maintaining law and order and supporting development initiatives.

“I hope the combination of special strategy, advanced technology, and specific intelligence will put the last nail in the coffin of terrorism and its whole support system,” Sinha concluded, stressing that future counter-terrorism success will depend heavily on effective technology implementation.

The Lieutenant Governor praised J&K Police’s recent performance in real-time intelligence sharing and rapid response capabilities, expressing hope these efforts would continue strengthening security throughout the region.
