Judge stays a CFTC case against soldier over prediction bets

  • A federal judge ordered a stay in the CFTC’s civil case against a US soldier pending the outcome of his criminal proceedings.
  • The soldier, Gannon Ken Van Dyke, is accused of using nonpublic information to profit over $400,000 on Polymarket prediction contracts.
  • The allegations stem from his involvement in a US operation to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

A federal judge in New York ordered a stay on the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s civil case against US Army Special Forces Master Sergeant Gannon Ken Van Dyke, pending the result of a parallel criminal proceeding. The ruling from District Judge Andrew Carter on Monday granted a motion filed by prosecutors in July to halt the CFTC’s action.

The allegations center on Van Dyke’s use of nonpublic information to earn more than $400,000 on Polymarket event contracts tied to the removal of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. According to the US Justice Department, Van Dyke was directly involved in the January operation to oust Maduro.
