Sam Bankman-Fried, the convicted founder of defunct cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has executed a notable political pivot while serving his 25-year sentence, expressing alignment with conservative figures and criticizing the current administration in what analysts interpret as a strategic bid for clemency.

In a revealing interview with the New York Sun, Bankman-Fried stated, “I became really frustrated and disappointed with what I saw of Biden’s administration,” marking a significant departure from his previous position as a major Democratic donor.

The former crypto executive, convicted on seven counts of fraud related to the $32 billion collapse of FTX, has begun praising Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s administrative approach, specifically endorsing aggressive bureaucratic restructuring. “Some things actually do need more than a 10% cut. They need a 30, 50, 70% [cut],” he expressed.

According to Bloomberg reports, Bankman-Fried’s parents have initiated discussions with individuals connected to Donald Trump‘s inner circle, exploring potential pardon opportunities. This strategy mirrors the case of Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who received clemency following similar political positioning.

The timing coincides with Trump’s recent announcement regarding plans to remove Biden-era U.S. Attorneys, suggesting a broader reshaping of the justice system that Bankman-Fried has criticized. His comments about Judge Kaplan, who presided over both his trial and Trump’s civil case, appear calculated to align his legal struggles with Trump’s judicial challenges.

Despite maintaining his innocence, declaring “I don’t think anyone was guilty,” Bankman-Fried faces the consequences of what prosecutors described as one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. history, involving the misappropriation of billions in customer funds.
