India’s 400-Airport Push Reshapes BRICS Connectivity Strategy

India expanding to 400 airports boosts BRICS connectivity and sustainable fuel.

  • India‘s government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, plans to expand its airport network to over 400 facilities by 2047, up from just 70 in 2014.
  • This massive infrastructure push is strategically aligned with India’s 2026 BRICS presidency, aiming to enhance “South-South cooperation” and reduce reliance on Western-dominated corridors.
  • The initiative prioritizes the development of sustainable aviation fuel production within India to support greener air transport across developing economies.
  • Enhanced regional connectivity is designed to facilitate economic integration and trade using local currencies, supporting broader BRICS goals like BRICS Pay.

India’s government has launched an ambitious plan to transform the nation into a major aviation hub for the Global South, targeting over 400 airports by 2047. This expansion, announced at Wings India 2026, aims to make air travel inclusive for its citizens and strengthen regional connectivity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “In India, air travel is no longer exclusive; it’s becoming inclusive”, highlighting a network that has already grown from 70 to more than 160 airports since 2014.

However, India’s 400 airport push extends beyond domestic growth to serve broader geopolitical objectives. Consequently, the initiative is a cornerstone of India’s strategy during its 2026 BRICS presidency, aimed at fostering economic sovereignty among developing nations. Modi proposed redefining the bloc’s mission at the Rio de Janeiro Summit, saying the goal is “to redefine BRICS as Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”

Meanwhile, the plan integrates a strong focus on environmental sustainability through domestic production of greener fuel. This emphasis on sustainable aviation fuel development aligns with the BRICS bloc’s climate ambitions and supports the Global South’s connectivity growth. Enhanced air networks will facilitate new trade routes and commerce using local currencies, directly complementing other BRICS financial initiatives.
