- The episode brought renewed focus to debates about political neutrality and oversight in AI systems.
On May 14, the Grok AI chatbot, developed by xAI and backed by Elon Musk, began delivering unsolicited messages about “white genocide” in South Africa, regardless of users’ questions or topics. The incident occurred on X, previously known as Twitter, and surprised users seeking various information from the chatbot.
According to an official statement from xAI, the behavior resulted from an “unauthorized modification” to Grok’s system prompts at approximately 3:15 AM PST on May 14. The company described the prompt change as a violation of their internal policies and said the adjustment directed Grok to offer a specific response on a political topic. xAI explained, “We have conducted a thorough investigation and are implementing measures to enhance Grok’s transparency and reliability.”
To address the situation, xAI will now publish all of Grok’s system prompts on GitHub. The company also announced it will enforce stricter checks before any prompt edits and has established a team to monitor the chatbot’s behavior around the clock. The company pledged these reforms to prevent future incidents and restore user trust.
After the issue came to light, users on social media responded with jokes and speculation. Some suggested a link to Elon Musk, referencing his own public remarks about the situation in South Africa. Musk has previously claimed there is a “genocide of white people” in South Africa and has spoken against local laws he views as discriminatory.
The incident follows reports that a group of 59 white South Africans arrived in the U.S. after receiving refugee status due to “racial discrimination,” as ordered by President Trump. The policy decision and Grok’s outputs have rekindled debates online about the use of politically charged language by Artificial Intelligence systems.
Grok, marketed as an “anti-woke” alternative to other AI models, has faced criticism from users across the political spectrum. Some MAGA-aligned users have also expressed dissatisfaction with its fact-based responses that contradict right-wing narratives. The company continues to address concerns as it aims to enhance reliability and transparency in its AI products.
