Google just tore down the paywall on one of its most useful AI tools, allowing anyone with a Google account to generate full HD videos for free inside Google Vids, the company’s browser-based video editor, the company announced on September 23. The tool runs on Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash, an AI model that turns text prompts, photos, audio, or existing clips into new video footage that previously lived behind a subscription.
Head to vids.new, sign in with any Google account, and start generating in 1080p at no cost. We tested it and the creation process is straightforward, though we could only generate 720p resolution videos. Google added scene extension to lengthen a clip while keeping lighting, characters, and setting consistent, plus exact scene duration controls to align with scripts or voiceovers.
Every video carries SynthID, a Google DeepMind watermark invisible to the eye but readable by machines, allowing anyone to check if a clip was AI-made via Google’s SynthID Detector. The generation is fast—we produced a short video in under 30 seconds. Making decent HD video used to mean paying for software or hiring an editor; now it’s a free browser tab.
Not every account gets the same allowance: personal accounts get a standard limit, paid AI plans unlock more, and Workspace Business subscribers get larger pools. Gemini Omni first launched as a paid feature in May 2026, with free access limited to YouTube Shorts. The timing is notable because OpenAI shut down the consumer Sora 2 app in April and its developer API went dark today.
Google also recently cut the API rate for Veo 3.1 Lite to $0.05 per second, undercutting rivals while Chinese competitors like Kling and Hunyuan Video keep price pressure on. A companion feature, Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite text-to-speech, is coming next to turn written scripts into voiceover narration in more than 100 languages.
