Golden Globe Winners Face Backlash Over AI Voice Enhancement Technology

Golden Globe Winners Face Scrutiny Over AI Voice Enhancement Technology Usage

  • Two Golden Globe-winning films spark controversy for using AI voice enhancement technology.
  • AI tool Respeecher was used to refine Hungarian pronunciation in “The Brutalist” and modify vocal ranges in “Emilia Pérez”.
  • Film directors defend AI usage as performance enhancement rather than replacement.
  • SAG-AFTRA concerns about AI usage in film production remain prominent following 2023 strikes.
  • Respeecher’s CEO emphasizes commitment to supporting rather than replacing voice actors.

Recent Golden Globe victories for “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Pérez” have sparked debate over Artificial Intelligence use in film production, as both productions employed AI voice modification technology despite ongoing industry concerns about automated systems replacing human talent.

AI Voice Enhancement in Award-Winning Films

The Brutalist, featuring Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones, utilized AI software to enhance the actors’ Hungarian pronunciation. Film editor Dávid Jancsó revealed that Respeecher, an AI-powered voice modification tool, helped perfect the Hungarian dialogue sequences.

In “Emilia Pérez,” sound mixer Cyril Holtz confirmed similar technology use to modify actor Karla Sofia Gascon’s vocal range, stating: “It started as a plan B but became plan A.”

Industry Response and Concerns

The revelations come after the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, where AI usage in entertainment was a central issue. Union spokesperson Zeke Alton previously told Decrypt: “We’re setting a precedent for how the workforce in general, both the United States and around the world, is going to be treated.”

Brady Corbet, director of The Brutalist, defended the technology’s use: “Innovative Respeecher technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only, specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy.”

Technology’s Track Record

Respeecher has previously recreated voices for iconic figures, including Jimmy Stewart, Elvis Presley, and James Earl Jones. The company’s CEO, Alex Serdiuk, emphasized their position:

“We developed Respeecher as an auxiliary tool that helps voice actors scale, monetize, and secure their voices.”

Google Deepmind researcher Alex Polozov supported the technology’s application, describing it as “using AI tools to enhance well-known art creation process, not replace it.”
