Gold trounces Bitcoin by 70% in past year, BTC halved

Gold surges 28% to $4,330, crushing Bitcoin as central banks hoard 863 tonnes.

  • Gold has rallied 28% over the past year to $4,330, outperforming Bitcoin by over 70 percentage points.
  • Bitcoin has declined 44% from $117,000 to $65,000 over the same period, trading 48% below its all-time high.
  • Central banks added 863 tonnes of gold to reserves in 2025, while Bitcoin’s institutional narrative weakened.

Gold has surged 28% over the past year from $3,400 to $4,330, massively outperforming its digital rival Bitcoin by over 70 percentage points, according to TradingView data. During the same period, Bitcoin has suffered an embarrassing 44% decline from $117,000 to $65,000.

The cryptocurrency hit an all-time high near $126,200 on October 6, 2025 but has since declined 48%, Forex/121815/bitcoins-price-history.asp”>data shows. Gold achieved its own record shortly after, with spot prices surging to $5,589 per ounce on January 28, 2026, a nominal high that sat well above the metal’s inflation-adjusted 1980 peak.

Evangelists have spent a decade comparing Bitcoin to a global store of value, but its performance has stalled that pitch. A dollar saved in gold a year ago is worth about $1.28 today, while a dollar saved in Bitcoin is worth about $0.55.

Investor Michael Burry wrote in February, “Bitcoin has been exposed as a purely speculative asset, and is not near the debasement trade hedge that gold and other precious metals are.” Central banks didn’t sit the trade out, adding 863 tonnes of gold to sovereign reserves in 2025, according to the World Gold Council.

Gold ETF investors reversed course too, with holdings swinging from a small net outflow in 2024 to inflows of more than 800 tonnes in 2025. While gold sat in vaults and preserved its value, the Bitcoin community fractured, with Michael Saylor’s Strategy selling Bitcoin for the first time since 2022.

Bitcoin has had shorter stretches when it outpaced its rival, and since its formative years in the 2010s, it has far outperformed gold. Nevertheless, over the past 12 and 36 months, gold hasn’t just beaten Bitcoin but trounced it by 70 percentage points.
