Gate.io accused of stalling $1.7M crypto theft probe

User accuses Gate.io of hindering $1.7M theft probe; exchange denies.

  • User “Jheioff” accuses Gate.io of withholding video and risk-control data from police after a $1.7 million theft.
  • Jheioff says the exchange delayed the investigation by requesting multiple document formats and questioning police identities.
  • Gate.io counters that Jheioff was slow to cooperate and that its own requests for verification were reasonable.

Crypto exchange Gate.io faces public allegations from a user who claims the company is hindering a police investigation into the theft of $1.7 million in crypto. User “Jheioff” says their account was drained on July 8 despite using phone, Google Authenticator, and email verification. According to a post on X, Jheioff filed a criminal case on July 17 but claims the exchange still hasn’t provided facial data or risk control information.

However, Gate.io has denied the accusations. The exchange stated that Jheioff was “very slow” and “consistently refused our assistance” on the day of the incident. It claims to have received an inquiry letter five days after the filing, only to find missing documents and credentials that could not be verified.

Consequently, a back-and-forth dispute erupted over procedural details. Jheioff alleges that Gate.io demanded a proper PDF file after receiving a compressed version, citing virus risks. The exchange then reportedly questioned whether the police officers were imposters and requested a video confirmation. Jheioff claims to have traveled to the police station but says Gate.io then refused video verification, citing missing materials.

Meanwhile, Gate.io maintains that it requested a video call to verify the case after spotting inconsistencies in contact information. The exchange says that as of July 27, three days after its request, it had not received a schedule for video verification. The company also reiterated that the theft was not the result of leaked data, contradicting Jheioff’s account.
