Game Awards Sensation ‘Catly’ Linked to Failed NFT Projects, Sparks AI Concerns

From AI Scams to Virtual Cats: The Controversial Past of Catly's Creator

  • Catly, a controversial video game featured at the 2024 Game Awards, has connections to previous failed NFT projects.
  • The game’s co-founder Kevin Yeung previously invested $2.5 million in an unreleased blockchain cat game called Alien Meow.
  • SuperAuthenti Co, Catly’s developer, is linked to Shanghai Binmao Technology, which created NFT-based mobile apps.
  • Social media users identified potential AI-generated assets in Catly’s marketing materials.
  • The project secured promotions from major influencers despite having only 1,300 social media followers.

A new video game showcased at the 2024 Game Awards has sparked controversy after investigations revealed its developer’s history with failed blockchain projects and potential AI-generated assets. The project, called Catly, received promotion from major influencers Pokimane and Ninja, despite raising red flags among crypto-aware observers.

Previous Blockchain Ventures

Kevin Yeung, Catly’s co-founder, previously launched TenthPlanet, which invested $2.5 million in a blockchain-based cat breeding game called Alien Meow. The project, which promised to replicate CryptoKitties’ breeding mechanics, never materialized despite plans for a Q1 2023 beta release.

Investigation by 80 Level revealed that SuperAuthenti Co, Catly’s developer, maintains ownership of Shanghai Binmao Technology. This subsidiary previously created Plantly: Mindful Gardening, an application incorporating digital tokens as core gameplay elements.

AI and NFT Concerns

While Catly’s marketing materials omit direct references to NFTs, social media users have identified potential AI-generated imagery in the game’s assets. The project’s Steam page displays similar gameplay mechanics to the unreleased Alien Meow.

The development team has begun removing AI-related comments from their social media posts, while Yeung’s LinkedIn profile has been deleted. With just 1,300 followers on their X account created in May 2023, questions persist about how the project secured its Game Awards presentation slot.

Current community concerns include:

  • Potential hidden NFT integration
  • Use of AI-generated assets without disclosure
  • Questionable apple Watch compatibility claims
  • Similarities to previous failed blockchain projects
