FTX executive’s wife seeks to block husband’s guilty plea evidence

Bond, Santos, and Van Dyke face charges of campaign finance, market manipulation, and insider trading

  • Michelle Bond, wife of former FTX executive Ryan Salame, filed a motion to exclude evidence of his guilty plea from her campaign finance trial
  • Former Congressman George Santos was ordered by the CFTC to pay $35,000 for manipulating Kalshi prediction market bets on his State of the Union attendance
  • US soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke moved to dismiss charges over an alleged $400,000 Polymarket insider trading bet using nonpublic military information
  • Van Dyke’s lawyers argue the Commodity Exchange Act is too ambiguous to fairly apply to prediction market wagers

Michelle Bond, the wife of former FTX Digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame, filed a motion Friday in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to exclude evidence of her husband’s guilty plea from her campaign finance case. Bond faces charges alleging her unsuccessful 2022 congressional run was partially funded by FTX contributions facilitated by Salame, who is currently serving a 90-month sentence.

Her legal team argued the plea materials lack probative value regarding Bond’s guilt. “Mr. Salame’s plea is an admission of his own guilt, not evidence of Ms. Bond’s state of mind,” the filing stated.

Meanwhile, former New York Congressman George Santos was ordered by the CFTC to pay over $35,000 in penalties and disgorgement for manipulating Kalshi prediction market bets. Santos traded event contracts on his own State of the Union attendance and made misleading social media posts to influence prices in his favor. He is barred from trading on prediction markets for three years and previously received a commuted prison sentence from President Trump.

In a separate case, US soldier Gannon Ken Van Dyke filed a 51-page memo to dismiss charges related to allegedly making over $400,000 on Polymarket using nonpublic information about a military operation to remove Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. His lawyers argue the Commodity Exchange Act is ambiguous in treating event contracts as swaps. “If Congress, executive branch agencies, and courts all find the ‘swap’ definition ambiguous, how can ordinary citizens have fair notice that prediction market wagers are covered by the CEA?” the filing asked. Van Dyke has pleaded not guilty, with a potential trial beginning in late 2026 or early 2027.
