Cuba submits BRICS membership application before 2026 summit

Cuba applies for full BRICS membership to boost economy amid tightened US sanctions.

  • Cuba has officially applied to join the BRICS alliance weeks before the 2026 summit in New Delhi
  • Full-fledged membership is a top priority amid tightened US sanctions and trade embargo
  • BRICS membership could boost Cuba’s economy through local currency trade and partnerships with China, Russia, India, and the UAE

Cuba has officially applied to join the BRICS alliance just weeks before the 2026 summit, scheduled for September 12 and 13 in India’s capital, New Delhi. A diplomat overseeing the process confirmed that full-fledged membership, not partner country status, remains the island nation’s top priority.

The application arrives as the US has tightened its sanctions, enforcing a comprehensive trade embargo and strict economic restrictions that block exports and imports. Joining the BRICS alliance could ease Cuba’s financial tribulations and strengthen its GDP through trade deals with China, Russia, India, and the UAE.

The bloc’s practice of trading in local currency could also lift the Cuban peso. Several nations are seeking BRICS membership to uplift their economies, according to reports.

The Cuban Embassy told Izvestia daily: “Cuba remains committed to plans to become a full-fledged member of BRICS. This is a top priority for our country, especially in these difficult times, amid the unprecedented escalation of the US economic war against Cuba.” The upcoming summit will decide whether BRICS approves Cuba’s application.

The embassy added: “The new phase of economic opening initiated in Cuba should contribute positively to the expansion of ties with BRICS, as it broadens the country’s capabilities in foreign economic relations.” This creates more opportunities for foreign investment and enables greater synergy with the economic institutions of BRICS member countries.
