In a move toward Dapp interoperability, CryptoKitties and Gods Unchained have joined forces.

The CryptoKitties team has partnered with Gods Unchained to release special items in each game, according to information shared with ETHNews. The crossover event will make available Gods Unchained-themed cats in CryptoKitties and CryptoKitties-related perks in Gods Unchained.

In the world of CryptoKitties, from today until January 21, players can breed the Gods Unchained-inspired Tally the Purrocious Cat by selecting the right combination of traits. In the realm of Gods Unchained, CryptoKitty owners can purchase “Cat in the Pack” card packs from today until January 28; with their purchases, players will receive tradable talismans to represent their Kitties.

Although the crossover will provide unique items for individuals to add to their non-fungible token collections, the event signals a larger focus on Dapp interoperability. Mack Flavelle, co-founder of CryptoKitties and Dapper Labs (the organization behind the game), spoke with ETHNews about this emphasis:

“The ability for digital assets secured by blockchain to be interoperable, for them to function across experiences and find new utility as a result, is something that excites both our teams. This is just one of many examples of how progress in this space makes it better for everyone: audiences see more value to their items and get an in-road to a new experience, and developers can enjoy the network effects.”

Indeed, Flavelle noted that CryptoKitties “intends to do everything [it] can” regarding Dapp interoperability. He maintains that the collaboration with Gods Unchained is “a small first step” toward what the team envisions as an eventual “common practice” in the crypto gaming space.

James Ferguson, CEO of Fuel Games (the gaming studio that developed Gods Unchained), also sees the benefit of collaboration among Dapps. He said the Gods Unchained-CryptoKitties partnership represents the possibility of “a truly decentralized gaming community … [o]ne in which interoperability is the rule, not the exception.”

Interoperability is not the go-to approach for many businesses, as they generally want to protect their intellectual property and maximize profit, but the development of interoperable technology holds the attention of multiple blockchain companies. Groups in the cryptospace like Kava Labs and Shyft, respectively, have expressed interest in interoperability and the potential it holds for the future of blockchain use cases, such as wielding digital items across multiple video games or having a cross-border identity management system.

The CryptoKitties and Gods Unchained crossover exemplifies the significance of interoperability and the desire of various blockchain companies to trek along the interoperable path.
