- OpenAI has significantly enhanced ChatGPT’s memory capabilities, allowing it to reference a user’s entire conversation history.
- The feature enables more personalized AI interactions and is initially rolling out to OpenAI Pro subscribers.
- Users maintain control over their data with options to opt out of memory features or use temporary chats.
OpenAI has launched an enhanced memory feature for ChatGPT that allows the AI assistant to access and reference a user’s complete conversation history, delivering more personalized responses. The upgrade, announced on April 10, 2025, is initially being released to paying customers on OpenAI’s Pro subscription tier, representing a significant step toward creating more personalized AI experiences.
“We have greatly improved memory in ChatGPT—it can now reference all your past conversations!” Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced on X. “This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized.”
Expanded Memory Capabilities
This enhancement builds upon ChatGPT’s previous memory function, which only allowed users to manually save specific information. The AI can now automatically draw context from any previous conversation to customize responses based on a user’s demonstrated preferences, writing style, and recurring questions. According to OpenAI, “New conversations naturally build upon what it already knows about you, making interactions feel smoother and uniquely tailored to you.”
Users maintain control over their data, with options to opt out completely or use temporary chats that won’t contribute to the system’s memory. OpenAI noted in its announcement that “If you want to change what ChatGPT knows about you, simply ask in chat.”
Rollout Plan and Accessibility
The memory upgrade is currently available to Pro subscribers, with Plus subscribers gaining access sometime later. Users in several European regions—including the European Economic Area, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein—won’t receive access, likely due to strict privacy regulations. Team, Enterprise, and Education users will gain access within “a few weeks,” according to OpenAI.
The enhancement may be powered by increased token context handling capabilities alongside retrieval augmented generation (RAG) tools. According to an email shared with Decrypt, “Reference chat history allows ChatGPT to draw context from past conversations to adapt to your tone, goals, interests, or other recurring topics. This evolves over time and is not stored or shown in settings the way saved memories are.”
This update arrives as AI companies race to make their tools more helpful through personalization and advanced information processing. The feature aims to create a more continuous relationship between users and AI, aligning with OpenAI’s direction when it released GPT-4.5, which was designed not just for more power but for a more natural conversation style.
For privacy-conscious users, the temporary chat option provides a way to interact with ChatGPT without contributing to its understanding of user preferences and behaviors. OpenAI hasn’t specified exactly how long conversation history will be retained or how extensively that data will be used to build user profiles.
