- The crypto community remains skeptical of the documentary’s evidence linking Todd to Satoshi Nakamoto.
Peter Todd, a longtime Bitcoin Core developer, has found himself at the center of controversy following allegations that he is the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto in a new HBO documentary titled “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery.”
Despite facing claims that would link him to $74.4 billion worth of Bitcoin, Todd maintains his denial both on-camera and through various public statements.
“I have taken some security measures,” Todd told Decrypt. “But it’s not a good idea to say exactly what I’ve done publicly. Best to keep the bad guys guessing.”
Public Appearances Continue Despite Controversy
Contrary to a recent Wired article suggesting Todd had gone into hiding, the developer has maintained an active public presence. He attended a Bitcoin conference in Lugano, Switzerland, where a Satoshi Nakamoto statue was revealed, and plans to speak at five more events globally.
Todd has managed to avoid public recognition from the documentary by declining audio and video interviews with journalists who reached out to him.
Documentary Evidence and Community Response
Director Cullen Hoback presented several pieces of circumstantial evidence in “Money Electric” to support his theory about Todd’s identity:
- Alleged similarities in writing styles between Todd and Satoshi
- Todd’s early experiments with digital currency as a teenager
- A questionable blog post that Hoback claims Todd posted from the wrong account
The crypto community has largely dismissed these claims, with Todd himself describing them as “ludicrous” during the documentary’s climax.
Ongoing Debate and Director’s Response
The controversy has sparked a public exchange between Todd and Hoback. After Todd disputed claims about being in hiding, Hoback posted on Twitter, suggesting Todd’s denial was itself evidence of deception.
“Peter Todd tells Wired he’s gone into hiding,” Hoback wrote. “Then he mocks Wired for running with this narrative, making an appearance today onstage.”
Todd’s involvement with Bitcoin dates back to its early days, making him a recurring subject of speculation regarding Satoshi’s identity. However, this HBO documentary has brought unprecedented attention to his potential connection to the cryptocurrency’s creation.
While the debate continues, Todd maintains his schedule of public appearances and engagement with the Bitcoin community, demonstrating that the allegations have not significantly altered his professional activities or public presence.
