- OpenAI has launched GPT-5.4-Cyber, a cybersecurity-specific variant of its flagship model, to accelerate defensive efforts.
- The company is scaling its Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) program to empower thousands of authenticated defenders.
- This release follows the preview of rival Anthropic‘s Mythos model, indicating a competitive push for AI-powered security tools.
- OpenAI’s Codex Security agent has already contributed to fixing over 3,000 critical and high-severity vulnerabilities.
On Tuesday, Apr 15, 2026, OpenAI unveiled GPT-5.4-Cyber, a specialized model for cybersecurity, just days after rival Anthropic previewed its own frontier intelligence system. The company said this move aims to speed up the work of defenders who secure critical digital infrastructure.
Concurrently, OpenAI announced a major expansion of its Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) program. The goal is to grant responsible access to thousands of individual security professionals and hundreds of teams.
However, OpenAI acknowledged that AI systems are inherently dual-use, where adversaries could repurpose defensive tools for discovering exploits. The firm’s strategy is a deliberate, iterative rollout to democratize access while minimizing such misuse and strengthening safeguards against adversarial attacks.
“As model capabilities advance, our approach is to scale cyber defense in lockstep: broadening access for legitimate defenders while continuing to strengthen safeguards,” the company added. This announcement builds on the success of its Codex Security agent, which has contributed to over 3,000 critical and high fixed vulnerabilities.
Meanwhile, this limited release follows Anthropic‘s controlled deployment of its Mythos model as part of Project Glasswing. That model reportedly found “thousands” of vulnerabilities in operating systems and web browsers.
“The strongest ecosystem is one that continuously identifies, validates, and fixes security issues as software is written,” OpenAI stated. The company believes integrating advanced models into developer workflows shifts security from episodic audits to ongoing, actionable risk reduction.
