Asian Bishops Draft AI Ethics Guidelines for Church Use

Asian Catholic Bishops Draft Ethical AI Guidelines for Ministry, Aligning with Vatican Concerns and Emphasizing Human Judgment

  • Asian Catholic bishops convened to draft ethics guidelines for AI use in ministry.
  • The meeting responds to Vatican concerns over AI’s ethical and spiritual impact.
  • Guidelines will be distributed to churches throughout Asia once finalized.
  • Participants emphasized careful use of AI without replacing human judgment.

Asian Catholic bishops gathered in Hong Kong this week to begin drafting the region’s first Church guidelines on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The effort aims to establish ethical standards as AI technologies become increasingly integrated into daily and Church activities.

The three-day meeting, held at St. Francis University, brought together bishops and communication officials from across Asia. The group examined AI’s influence on Church operations and Catholic media. This initiative follows warnings from the Vatican about potential risks linked to AI, including algorithmic bias and deepfakes, as highlighted by Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV.

Hong Kong’s Cardinal Stephen Chow, who opened the meeting, described AI as a “gift from God” and encouraged participants to approach the technology with “caution and confidence instead of fear”. The discussion reflected a shift toward recognizing AI’s divine origin rather than viewing it as a threat.

Attendees stressed that AI already affects how people receive information and make decisions. Paolo Ruffini, prefect of the Dicastery for Communication, warned that despite AI’s growing role, “Artificial intelligence must never replace us,” and “True wisdom cannot come from machines and algorithms.”

The bishops aim to finalize a draft set of guidelines for Asian dioceses, supporting the Vatican’s broader push for AI oversight. These guidelines will be circulated to churches throughout Asia, helping to ensure responsible AI use within the Catholic ministry.
